The via ferrata is regularly inspected for technical safety. However, conditions on the via ferrata and the approach are weather-dependent, and additional equipment (e.g., crampons) may be necessary in addition to the standard via ferrata gear.

Tour description

The Kleiner and Grosser Koppenkarstein, both very scenic mountains, are relatively easy to reach by means of the Westgrad Klettersteig. The via ferrata is also sitable for climbers with less fixed-cable experience, even featuring a unique rope bridge across the Austriascharte. However, the elevation (ca. 3000 m) should be taken into consideration. This is also the descent route for the Irg 2 via ferrata.

From the Dachstein Glacier cable car mountain station, you can either descend directly east to the Schladming Glacier via a short via ferrata (C/D) or comfortably follow the groomed trail to the access point near the Hunerscharte.

From the via ferrata at the Austriascharte, before the rope bridge, head north to the large ladder leading to the Rosmarie Tunnel, descend to the Schladming Glacier, and return to the Hunerkogel via the groomed trail, or follow the approach from Hunerscharte to the Hunerkogel as you did on the ascent.

Arriving from the west: From the west you can take the Munich-Salzburg motorway, continuing on the Tauern motorway (A 10) until the Ennstal junction. From here take the Ennstal A-road (the B 320) for around 30 km into the Schladming-Dachstein region, then take the Ramsau am Dachstein turn-off. Drive through the Ramsau Village and then turn left to Dachstein toll road. Continue up to the parking lot at Dachstein glacier cable-car.

Arriving from the north: From the south-east take the Pyhrnautobahn motorway (A 9) to the Liezen junction and then the Ennstal A-road (B 320) into the Schladming-Dachstein region. Then take the Ramsau am Dachstein turn-off. Drive through the Ramsau Village and then turn left to Dachstein toll road. Continue up to the parking lot at Dachstein glacier cable-car.

From Schladming Rathausplatz (town center) or the train station, take the Ramsau public transport bus line 960 to the final stop at the valley station of the Dachstein Glacier cable car.
