Nickel Museum

Rohrmoos-Obertal

In the Hopfriesen Nickel Museum in Obertal near Schladming, modern architecture meets historical buildings. The museum, in a "glass showcase" in the middle of the natural landscape of the Schladminger Tauern, takes visitors on a journey back in time to the era of mining, when nickel extraction shaped everyday life. The exhibition combines tradition, art and history: contemporary art refers to earlier functions, while the materials of the buildings are reminiscent of the processing of nickel. The result is an authentic insight into the life of the miners of the past. The museum shows which products were made from nickel in the past and today - from tea chests to prosthetic legs - and illustrates the enduring importance of the metal. For children, the little mountain sprite "Nicki" playfully guides them through the exhibition, explains the discovery of nickel and invites them to join in and explore.
