The tour
Wide, groomed winter walking trail through the forest to the summit of Hochwurzen (1,852 m). You can either walk uphill to the mountain terminal of the Gipfelbahn Hochwurzen cable-car or take the cable-car and walk downhill.
Turn-by-turn directions
From Hotel Winterer you follow Hochwurzenstraße road (the toboggan run) to the 1st hairpin. Here you turn-off right and follow the 4-seasons trail. You walk for quite a bit until you reach another hairpin (with turn-off to Neudeggalm). You make a left here and follow the signs towards Hüttecksattel and Hochwurzen. Via several hairpins you ascend to the mountain saddle of Hüttecksattel and from there you reach the Hochwurzen toboggan run in a couple of minutes. You follow the toboggan run uphill for about 400 meters (one hairpin) and reach Hochwurzenalm chalet. Another 200 m uphill you reach the summit of Hochwurzen and Hochwurzenhütte Inn.
Getting there
From Schladming take provincial highway L722 (Rohrmoosstraße road) to Rohrmoos and continue until you reach Hotel Winterer at the valley terminal of the chairlift "Hochwurzen II".
With the Planai buses from Schladming (Planet-Planai, Lendplatz) or Rohrmoos (Rohrmoos-Zentrum) to Hotel Winterer in Rohrmoos.
Parking
Parking is available next to Hotel Winterer.
Start
Hotel Winterer, valley terminal of chair-lift Hochwurzen II
Destination
Hochwurzenhütte chalet, Hochwurzen
Security
In winter time it is therefore important to also be careful on supposedly easy walks. Sections that are in the shadows can easily get icy, and slopes on the side of the trail may have avalanche hazard. Mountain sport is always carried out under personal responsibility - in winter even more than in summer. Tourist offices or avalanche warning services do not take any responsibility in respect to information provided.
Equipment
Good winter shoes, warm clothing, tuque, and gloves. You might also want to carry a small backbag with a warm drink in a thermos jug.
