Avalanche warning levels

Before setting out on any ski tour, it’s worth checking the current avalanche warning level. It provides important information about the danger situation in the terrain and helps you assess risks correctly and plan your tour safely.

The snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. Avalanches can only be triggered by a large additional load in extremely steep terrain or in isolated areas. Only small spontaneous avalanches are possible, and overall conditions are considered safe for ski touring.

Avalanches can be triggered only by large additional loads. On some steep slopes (steeper than 30°), the snowpack is moderately bonded, but otherwise well consolidated. Avoid extremely steep slopes.

The snowpack is weakly to moderately bonded on many slopes. Avalanches are possible, especially on steep terrain and even with only slight additional loads. Medium-sized, and occasionally large, spontaneous avalanches can occur.

The snowpack is poorly bonded on most slopes. Even a small additional load, such as a single skier, can trigger avalanches. Numerous medium to large spontaneous avalanches are likely. Ski touring is not recommended under these conditions.

The snowpack is extremely unstable and poorly bonded. Even in moderately steep terrain, large avalanches are likely. Ski touring is not possible under avalanche warning level 5. Always check the current avalanche situation before heading out:👉 www.lawine-steiermark.at
