Nickelmuseum

A remarkable "glass display case" set amidst the impressive natural landscape of the Schladming Tauern takes visitors back in time to a time when the extraction of raw materials was a daily activity in the Schladming Tauern. Modernity and tradition collide at the head of the Obertal valley in the form of simple architecture and old, weathered buildings. Contemporary art illustrates past functions, while the present is confronted with history. The choice of building materials also reflects two elements that played a key role in the creation and processing of the raw material nickel. The museum thus provides an authentic insight into life in the days of miners.

The Hopfriesen Nickel Museum is thus a part of the historic mining industry. Of outstanding cultural and mining history, the former nickel smelting furnace has been transformed into a museum that is unique in Central Europe. Here, visitors can see what was once made from the precious metal and what nickel is used for today: often invisible, yet indispensable. From tea chests to prosthetic legs, the broad spectrum of objects made from nickel, past and present, ranges from "tea chests" to "prosthetic legs."

For our youngest visitors, a little mountain goblin named "Nicki" tells how the shiny silver metal came to be named after him. Throughout the exhibition, he points out pieces specifically for children to discover. "Nicki" brings the exhibition to life for young visitors and encourages them to conduct their own research.
