Castle Großsölk with Jesuitgarden
Tour description
Castle Großsölk
The historic house was built in the 14th century and has always played an important role for the old trade routes over the Sölk Pass. Until the 17th century, the castle was owned by the respective princes of the region, who ultimately sold it to the Order of the Jesuits in 1617. After the dissolution of the Order, the house became a parish farm and since 1998, the castle has been the seat of the nature park house.
New Exhibition 2025: "The Lost Night Sky - Light Pollution and its Effects"
We are dedicating ourselves to one of the least recognized environmental issues of our time: light pollution. The exhibition compellingly shows how artificial light has changed our view of the night sky and what effects this has on humans, animals, and the environment.
Special Exhibition: "The Gold of the Alm"
We present the special exhibition "The Gold of the Alm" in the castle gallery. The Ennstaler Steirerkäs is a regionally typical agricultural product with a long tradition and history. Embedded in the cultural development history, the exhibition showcases the ancient cheese tradition from the Middle Ages to modern times.
Sölker Jesuit Garden
The Jesuit garden in the courtyard of Castle Großsölk is recognized as an educational and demonstration garden. In addition to flowers, many medicinal and culinary herbs thrive here, as well as new and old forgotten vegetable varieties. During the guided tours, you will learn interesting facts about their use in cooking, cosmetics, and folk medicine. Visiting the Jesuit garden without a guided tour is possible daily.
St. Leonhard Church
The St. Leonhard Church was the former noble horse stable of the aristocratic castle owners until the arrival of the Jesuits. In 1743, the stable was converted into a church by the order's brothers.
