Map, elevation profile & further information

From the town center of Mößna, follow the trail markings #902/909 slightly uphill into “Seifrieding”. After the road turns more south in a big right-hand bend, you reach a bridge where hiking trail #902/909 branches off left up into Mößnakar and to Gstemmerscharte.

Continue up the forest road and three hairpin bends, then the hiking trail branches off from the road. Shortly afterwards you cross the forest road once more and then walk steadily uphill on the north-eastern slope into Mößnakar. The path up to the Gstemmerscharte wind gap becomes a little steeper. From the gap you take path #911 south towards Bärneck. Along the ridge you finally reach the summit of the Großes Bärneck at 2,071 m. The way back is via the same route.
In Pruggern or Espang, exit the B320 Ennstal federal highway and follow the L712 Steiner Straße to Stein an der Enns. In the town, turn onto the L704 Erzherzog-Johann-Straße into the Großsölk valley. Follow the L704 through the villages of Gatschberg, Feista, and Fleiß to Mößna. The nature park pavilion with a hiking portal is located at the southern entrance to the town. Parking is available on the parking lot at the nature park pavilion.
Take the train to Stein an der Enns station. During the Styrian summer holidays, there is a connection to Großsölk from there via the Sölker Tälerbus – stop "Mößna Ort". The Nature Park pavilion is located on the left-hand side after the bridge, next to the fire station of the Mößna volunteer fire brigade.
A good backpack is helpful, and for routes in alpine terrain, a hat, gloves, a good jacket, and trousers are essential. Good, waterproof shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sufficient drinks are crucial. A flashlight, maps, a knife, and a small first-aid kit are also necessary.

  • Plan your tour in advance, taking into account hiking time, distance, elevation gain, potential hazards, and the weather forecast.
  • The Alpine Club provides detailed information on "Safe Mountain Hiking." You can find comprehensive information at www.alpenverein.at.
  • Many things are more enjoyable and safer together in the mountains. Don't hike alone if possible, and adapt the tour to the abilities of your group.
  • Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Sign the hut or summit register. Turn back in good time if the weather deteriorates.
  • If you get caught in a thunderstorm, do not stay on the summit or ridge and keep away from isolated trees. Wait out the thunderstorm, preferably in a crouched position.
  • Stay on the marked trails and remember to close any gates you encounter.
  • The ascent is only half the battle. Pay particular attention on the descents to ensure a safe return to the valley.
  • In case of emergency, remain calm and call mountain rescue at 140. If you have no signal, remove your SIM card and dial 112.
  • If you encounter cows: It's best to walk above the herd, keeping at least 50 meters away. Remain calm, avoid sudden movements, and do not run away. Do not imitate cow noises or attempt to pet the animals. In an emergency, a stick and loud shouting can often persuade the animals to turn back.
  • If you are a dog owner: Check before your hike whether you will need to cross a pasture. Keep your dog on a leash and ensure it behaves calmly. If your dog is attacked by a cow, immediately unleash it. Never pick it up to defend it.
