Hans Knauss Trail

Tour description

The loop starts at the Untertal-Dorf hiking portal or the Landalm pedestrian bridge and leads over 10 km with a total elevation gain of 260 meters to the Tetter Inn and back again. The running loop is named after the ski racer Hans Knauß, who grew up not far from Untertal in the Fastenberg district. For several years, Hans Knauß was one of the best ski racers in the giant slalom, super-G, and downhill disciplines. He also won the silver medal in the super-G at the 1998 Winter Olympics, the silver medal in the giant slalom at the 2003 World Championships, and the bronze medal in the super-G at the 1999 World Championships. Today, he is widely known as a television presenter of a folk music program and as a co-commentator of alpine ski races.

Map, elevation profile & further information

The trail starts at the Untertal-Dorf hiking portal, from where you follow the signs for the Wild Waters theme trail up the valley. You walk along the Untertalbach stream through the village and, at the end of the village, cross a bridge towards Ahlhof. From there, the trail continues steadily uphill along a field path to the Gföllerhof on the Janerweg. You then walk along this path to the Janerbrücke bridge, where the path joins the Untertalstraße. Briefly along the road and, before the next bridge, continue right onto the theme trail. You will soon reach the Tettermoor and, shortly afterward, the Tetter Inn, situated on a hill above.

From here, you head out of the valley. Briefly along the road and then turn right onto the Gföhlweg. You walk out of the valley along this beautiful forest path, past the farmsteads on the Janerweg, until the trail rejoins the Janerweg at the Wieserhof. You continue along the gravel road towards Fastenberg. At the forest road junction, turn left downhill toward Untertal and Schladming. Via the Stadlweg, you reach the Spreizweg at the Fenz farm. Follow this path back down the valley to Untertal village.
From Schladming take provincial highway L722 (Rohrmoosstraße road) to Rohrmoos and at the roundabout continue on provincial highway L723 (Tälerstraße road) to the village of Untertal.Parking is available at the trail head.
