MANASLU - Avalanches of emotions

"It's not just the peaks in the Himalayas that are far bigger than at home - our emotions were too," say Marlies Czerny and Andreas Lattner. The two have climbed all the four-thousand-meter peaks in the Alps. But what they experienced in Nepal on the 8,163-metre-high Manaslu and while trekking around it was characterized by incomparable highs and lows. What fascination drove them to travel (a second time) from their beloved Alps to an 8,000-metre peak? How does it feel to climb into the death zone without additional oxygen and without Sherpas? What deep emotions did the couple experience when they separated shortly below the summit - and only one of them completed this dream?

The "Mountain of Souls" didn't make it easy for anyone last fall. Avalanches thundered down to the base camp, the mountain claimed lives and there was no end to the monsoon. With the extreme danger of avalanches and a record number of climbers, Manaslu made it into the German-language media. Only very few reached the summit. What remains of the dream and the beauty of the Himalayas when 1000 people are on the same mountain? Fortunately: a lot.
