Schladminger Tauern High Trail
The high trails in the Schladminger Tauern range are amongst the most beautiful hikes in the Schladming-Dachstein region. However, those trails also are a challenge to hikers and mountaineers - therefore, surefootedness, a good level of stamina, a head for heights, and the respective equipment are required.
The Schladminger Tauern High Trail takes you into alpine terrain along extensive parts of the route. Several sections in very exposed terrain are secured with steel ropes and shoud only be walked by mountaineers with a good amount of experience in alpine terrain. The respective equipment goes without saying. The difficulty of the routes rises explicitly with bad weather conditions.
Especially in the beginning of summer there is always the chance of residual snowfields along the trails. Partially they can even stay the whole summer long. It is important to keep updated about current weather conditions to include those in your planning of your tour. Please do always keep in mind that in high alpine terrain weather can change rapidly.
5-day-tour Schladminger Tauern High Trail
In total, the Schladminger Tauern High Trail covers a distance of 70 kilometers in 7 different stages.
The somewhat shorter 5-day tour spanning 45 km follows mountain trails flanking the Obertal and Untertal valleys of Rohrmoos, taking hikers on a broad loop from the Hochwuren in Rohmoos and the Planai in Schladming.
Lying in between are 5 stages along path which, in some cases, look back on a long fascinating history, with numerous summiteering adventures, breathtaking panoramas, friendly and inviting huts along the way, here amid an Alpine world teeming with an abundance of water in every form.
Avid hikers Moon & Honey Travel have done the tour themselves and their blog post about the 5-day-tour in the Schladminger Tauern range provides great overview and useful info.
