The tour

According to the romantic relationship between the “Styrian Prince” Archduke Johann and Anna Plochl, the daughter of a postmaster in Aussee, those two are forever united in the eternal rock of the Dachstein. The via ferrata Anna is a scenic and enchanting route from the Südwand hut to the entry point of the Johann route. Its entry point is at an elevation of about 1,800 m, the top at about 2,100 m.

„Der Johann“, definitely comparable to the long via ferrata routes of the Dolomites, is one of the Alps’ most beautiful protected climbing paths. This is why it is also one of the most popular routes in Austria. The main difficulties are along the lower rock face, but there are also some passages along the upper part, in the area of the “große Rampe”, that require full concentration and an excellent fitness level! Also in the upper part, there is the danger of falling rocks. The entry of the Johann is considered to be its crux, and many a mountaineer already had to turn back. More than 700 metres of steel cable and 250 iron pegs lead you through this extremely difficult rock wall. The view of the Lower Tauern and the Dachstein south face is incredible. The exit is right at the Seethaler hut.

Turn-by-turn directions

Anna:

Approach: From the Dachstein gondola bottom station, hike along the well-marked trail about 30 minutes to the Dachsteinsüdwand hut (1871 m). At the hut, follow the signposts for “Perner Weg” (don’t follow the signs for „Johann Klettersteig“). Once on the Perner Weg, follow the signposts “Anna Klettersteig”.

Descent: Or you take the approach for the Johann (about 40 minutes), or you keep climbing and take the Johann up to the Seethaler hut. From there, you take the gondola back down to the bottom station.

Johann:

Approach: Hike along the well-marked path from the Dachstein gondola bottom station for about 30 minutes to the Dachsteinsüdwand hut. Follow the path hiking down for a few minutes, then, after about 100 metres, turn right following the signpost „Johann Klettersteig“. There are protections along this path already, but often under the snow. Alternatively, you can choose the Anna route as approach.

Descent: From the Seethaler hut, hike down southeast-bound across the Hallstatt glacier to the Dachstein gondola top-station. If you have missed the last gondola-descent, take the via ferrata „Hunerscharten-Klettersteig” to hike down (about 1.5 h).

Arriving from the north:
From the south-east take the Pyhrnautobahn motorway (A 9) to the Liezen junction and then the Ennstal A-road (B 320) into the Schladming-Dachstein region. Then take the Ramsau am Dachstein turn-off.
