Untertal Valley Panoramic Tour
easy Hiking · Schladming
Nostalgia, fauna, flora and sheer limitless panoramic views!
The Untertal Panorama Tour runs along the Untertalbach creek for the first part and then continues along the slopes of Planai back to the village of Untertal - the Dachstein massif always in your view.
You start your hike into the valley along the theme trail Wild Waters along the Untertalbach creek. Passing by the Ahlhof farm you walk over meadows and then continue slightly uphill to the Gföller farm. There, you walk on along the street until you reach Untertalstraße road at the Janerbrücke bridge. Follow the road for about 200 m to Hinkerbrücke bridge, where we turn off right towards the next natural highlight - the "Toteisboden" conservation area, which is a steeply sloping moor that functions as "natural refrigerator".
Once you reach Tettermoor the trail you make a left towards Gasthof Tetter inn. From the inn you continue left (along the street) for about 200 m and then turn off right onto the "Gföllweg" trail. This beautiful path takes you through forest and over meadow sections with marvellous views of the Untertal valley and to the Dachstein massif. You follow the trail until you reach Fastenbergweg road near the Wieser farm. Continue on the road for about 500 m and then turn off left towards the Fenz farm (direction Schladming/Talbachklamm). At the Fenz farm make a left again and continue on the Spreitzweg road back to your starting point in the village of Untertal.

Changes in weather patterns, quick falls in temperature, thunderstorms, wind, fog and snow are some of the dangers that can be encountered on a hiking tour. Hosts of alpine huts and mountain refuges have a lot of experience in the mountains and can give good advice about weather and the trails. Poor equipment, overestimation of one's own capabilities, carelessness, poor personal constitution and/or wrong judgement can lead to critical situations. In case of thunderstorms: avoid summits, ridges and steel ropes.
GPS data and orienteering
Available GPS data - just like hiking maps - is only a guidance for orientation and can never depict a trail exactly with all its details. Especially at dangerous spots it is essential to judge on site how to proceed.
In an emergency please call:
- 140 - for Alpine emergencies (all over Austria)
- 112 - European GSM emergency number
An extended tour via Talbachklamm is possible. Additional walking time: 1 hour
For the extended tour continue to the right at Fenz farm, passing by Spreitzhof farm and making your way downhill through the forest until you reach Talbachklamm gorge. There make a left, and continue through the gorge back to the starting point in the village of Untertal.
