Erzberg Mine Adventure

Immerse yourself in the world of mining and an ore mine filled with adventure!

The Erzberg is a world unique unto itself. It is the biggest, most modern open-cast mine in Central Europe, the most important ore storage site in the Alps, the cradle of industrialization in Austria, and the venue for the hardest Enduro race in the world: the Erzberg Rodeo.

HAULY RIDES
Two vehicles, Hauly I und II – rebuilt 860-horsepower monsters with viewing platforms – take you out into the middle of the mine. Along the way, you will see how the different  stages of open-cast mining work. During this hour-long drive,
you will learn lots about the Hauly itself, ore mining and the daily work of a miner. Plus, you’ll get to see  where the Erzberg Rodeo takes place.

LIVE BLASTING
Every Thursday, you have the opportunity to take a one-hour Hauly ride and see how 50,000 tons of rock are blasted away, one layer after another. You will also receive a list of the standard blasting procedures to take home with you as a souvenir.

OPEN AIR EXHIBITION OSWALDI
Relax as you discover an fascinating work setting. On spacious grounds at 878 m above sea level, visitors can take an intriguing-yet-relaxing walk between old mining machinery and modern art elements, simultaneously able to experience the world of opencast mining on the Erzberg up close.

THE SHOW MINE
During a guided tour through  the subterranean labyrinth of the Erzberg lasting about one-and-a-half hours, you will get to know the underground working world of miners. You will learn about how the Erzberg was created, hear the legend of the “Wassermann” and how the mountain was first discovered, and get to witness an audiovisual reenactment of lasting. And for those of you who wish to lend a hand, you are welcome to grab a shovel or one of the pneumatic hand drills!
