Ruins of Church Ägydius

A place to linger.

The church ruins above Donnersbach are dedicated to St. Ägydius. As the patron saint of merchants and travellers, his patron saint's house is connected to the old salt road - the pass road leading from the Enns valley over the Glattjoch into the Murtal at that time.

The oldest written reference dates from 1357, but the building is considerably older. Even before the church was built, a cemetery existed on this site. The church was abandoned in 1785 and the walls still visible today are from the Romanesque church from the first half of the 12th century.

After archaeological investigations, structural repairs and security measures, the church ruins have been open to the public since 2000.
